This issue, written by Paul J. Crossman, Jr. gives a detailed account of “A History of the Rutland County Sheriff’s Department 1781-2007” and the “Rutland City Police Department 1892-2007”.
By 1781 many persons were failing to pay property taxes and a sheriff’s department became a necessity. Until the time of this writing there were 22 sheriffs, with The City
Police Department established later, in 1892, having 21 Chiefs.
The article traces the development of both departments, naming both the Sheriffs and Chiefs of Police and all of the officers serving at that time.
The article is well illustrated with group pictures of sheriff deputies and individual pictures of previous chiefs and sheriffs. An interesting and detailed recounting of law enforcement over the years.
